Flowers Foods has become one of the largest producers of fresh baked goods in the United States. Headquartered in Thomasville, Flowers Foods began as a local provider of fresh bread and grew to become one of the largest bakery operations in the nation. Flowers has annual sales of more than $1.5 billion, and its products, including several well-known brands of bread, are distributed nationally.

Flowers Foods Inc., which makes packaged breads, rolls and snack cakes, said Thursday fourth quarter profit climbed 35 percent, helped by higher prices and strong bakery sales. For the quarter ended Dec. 29, net income rose to $21.4 million, or 23 cents per share, from $15.8 million, or 17 cents per share in the prior year quarter.

According to Flowers Foods, favorable pricing of 5.6% and positive mix shifts of 1.8% drove the sales growth. Unit volume in the quarter was down slightly from last year as the decline in single unit snack cakes offset gains in loaf bread units and multi-pack snack cake units.
