Florida Parishes: West Florida
built 233 days ago
The Florida Parishes are those parishes in Louisiana which were part of West Florida in the early 19th century. Unlike much of the state of Louisiana, this region was not part of the Louisiana Purchase, as it remained under Spanish control.

The eight Florida Parishes embrace a subtly varying land. From just less than 400 feet elevation along the boundary with the state of Mississippi, the land surface slopes in two general segments to sea level along the boundary with the Isle of Orleans. The division between these two segments lies close to the boundaries between East Feliciana and East Baton Rouge in the west, between St. Helena and Livingston in the middle, and between Washington and St. Tammany in the east. West Feliciana lies in the northern, higher, hillier segment, while Tangipahoa lies in both. The southern tier... has a low, very gently sloping surface, while the northern tier has a hilly, dissected surface. Along the very southern margin of the Florida Parishes, the surface becomes flat and low enough for swamps and even marshes.

The Florida Parishes of Louisiana stretch from the Mississippi state line on its eastern and northern borders, to the Mississippi River on its western border, and Lake Pontchartrain on its southern border. The most populated community is the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. St. Tammany Parish is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area.

One of Louisiana's historic Florida Parishes, St. Helena was established in 1810. It is located a few minutes off Interstate 55, which enters the state in the area described as the "toe" of Louisiana. In fact, boots are very much in evidence in this rural region. Visitors will enjoy the cuisine at Bear Creek Steakhouse, located on Highway 16 in Montpelier. Pine forests scent the air at the St. Helena Forest Festival held in Greensburg the last Saturday in August. The Amite River forms the western boundary of the parish and the Tickfaw flows along the eastern side.

After enduring for only 74 days, the fledgling Republic of West Florida was annexed by the United States. The Americans quickly made their presence known and the strategic location of the territory was highlighted when the British sought to capture New Orleans during the War of 1812. St. Tammany played a crucial role in the fighting during that conflict as Andrew Jackson marched south to defend New Orleans cutting a new trail through the region that would later emerge as the Jackson Military Road. Fighting ... erupted in the waters off ST. Tammany as Thomas ap Catesby Jones tiny naval flotilla engaged the British in Lake Borgne near the Rigolets as they advanced against New Orleans.

Location and physiography - The East Gulf Coastal Plain extends from the Florida Parishes of Louisiana over most of Mississippi, some of western Tennessee and Kentucky, the southwestern 2/3 of Alabama, and the western panhandle of Florida. Its southern boundary is the Gulf of Mexico and its western boundary the drop into the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. On the north it extends to the highlands of the Interior Low Plateaus and southern Appalachians. To the east, there is an arbitrary break with the South Atlantic Coastal Plain at the Alabama-Georgia border south through Florida along the Apalachicola River. The flat to rolling topography is broken by numerous streams and river bottoms. Uplands are dominated by pine, originally longleaf and slash in the south and shortleaf mixed with hardwoods in the north.
