The Florida Panhandle is to the state as Jan Brady of TV's The Brady Bunch is to her family. Cindy, the cute younger sister, could represent Orlando and Tampa, with their amusements and attractions. South and Southwest Florida could be Marcia, the gorgeous older sister whom everyone fawns over and talks about. Then there's the misunderstood, underestimated, middle sister Jan -- in this case, Northwest Florida, aka the Panhandle -- always getting the shaft, even though she has some great qualities all her own, if only people took the time to discover them. For the Panhandle, this is a particular shame, since it is a dynamic, uncommonly beautiful part of Florida.

The Florida Panhandle includes some of the state's most rugged hiking. Along the Apalachicola River, deep ravines and high bluffs define Torreya State Park, where trillium and columbine peep out of the leaf-strewn forest floor and the rare Torreya, the "stinking gopherwood" tree, grows. Magnolias and elms grow tall at Fort Braden, where you can camp within sight of Lake Talquin, just west of Tallahassee. Along the shores of Lake Jackson, Phipps Park provides variety along its day use trails. The Garcon Point Trail near Milton is a delight for pitcher plant lovers.
