Florida Panhandle

Frommer's Florida 2008 The Florida Panhandle is to the state as Jan Brady of TV's The Brady Bunch is to her family. Cindy, the cute younger sister, could represent Orlando and Tampa, with their amusements and attractions. South and Southwest Florida could be Marcia, the gorgeous older sister whom everyone fawns over and talks about. Then there's the misunderstood, underestimated, middle sister Jan -- in this case, Northwest Florida, aka the Panhandle -- always getting the shaft, even though she has some great qualities all her own, if only people took the time to discover them. For the Panhandle, this is a particular shame, since it is a dynamic, uncommonly beautiful part of Florida.

Destin vacation rentals are among the most popular and include condos, townhomes and private vacation homes. The Florida Panhandle includes some of the state's most rugged hiking. Along the Apalachicola River, deep ravines and high bluffs define Torreya State Park, where trillium and columbine peep out of the leaf-strewn forest floor and the rare Torreya, the "stinking gopherwood" tree, grows. Magnolias and elms grow tall at Fort Braden, where you can camp within sight of Lake Talquin, just west of Tallahassee. Along the shores of Lake Jackson, Phipps Park provides variety along its day use trails. The Garcon Point Trail near Milton is a delight for pitcher plant lovers.
The Florida Panhandle presents a unique opportunity for the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF). This 11,000 square mile area has the highest stream density in the state and three of Florida's five largest rivers. With agricultural and timber economies in the interior, significant federal and state ownership in forests and military bases, and resort development pressures on the coast, the region is just beginning to feel the effects of sprawl and habitat fragmentation.
The Florida Panhandle was battered last year by Ivan, one of the four hurricanes to strike the state within a few weeks. Florida was ... struck by Charley, Frances and Jeanne, and together the four storms caused about 130 deaths in the United States and were blamed for $22 billion in insured damage.

The Panhandle is home to two of Florida's four dry counties, where the sale of alcohol is prohibited (Washington and Liberty). However, alcohol of any variety can be found in abundance in the college town of Tallahassee and the Spring Break destination of Panama City Beach.
