How the Florida Keys used to be. This lovely quiet island has the feeling of the Keys from at least a generation ago. Great fishing, snorkeling and watersports, terrific small island resort accommodations on the water, a couple of good restaurants, and a relaxed, laid back lifestyle. And it's only a few miles up the road to Marathon for more restaurants, shops and services.

March 28: Fourteen Cuban migrants sent back home after reaching an abandoned bridge in the Florida Keys began the process to get their government's approval to return to the United States for good. One of the migrants, Elizabeth Hernandez, told the press in a telephone conversation from her home in Matanzas province that the group gave Cuban immigration officials their requests for exit permits necessary to leave the country. Cuban authorities in Matanzas, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Havana, said the migrants would receive an answer within 30 days, Hernandez said.

Musicians, artists, politicians and community volunteers persevered against the worst hurricane season in history to bring an outstanding event to the Florida Keys while raising funds for Ocean Springs MS, a town devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Islamorada declared Ocean Springs their sister city, planned a benefit concert and raised thousands of dollars before hurricane Wilma forced the third consecutive hurricane evacuation of the Keys and a postponement of the planned event.
