Florida Atlantic University is a distributed university located on seven campuses spread across Palm Beach, Broward, and St. Lucie Counties. Florida Atlantic University also operates two campuses in the St. Lucie County cities of Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce, the latter at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI). Harbor Branch is in the process of merging with the university to become the HBOI at FAU.[2][3] In addition to students who attend classes on the universities campuses, there are 1,623 distance learning students who conduct their studies over the internet or through other means.

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is a midsize comprehensive university located on an 850-acre site near the Atlantic Ocean. It was established in 1961, making it the fifth-oldest university in the state system. As an upper-division and graduate state university, FAU admitted its first student in September1964. In 1984 FAU admitted its first freshman class, instituting a comprehensive four-year undergraduate program. Enrollment has increased from 867 in the first year to 26,000 in 2004.

Florida Atlantic University's admission requirements have been traditionally considered low.[26][27] Recently... the institution has begun gradually increasing standards to improve its graduation and retention rates. Starting in the summer of 2004, Florida Atlantic began denying entry to students with low GPAs and SAT scores. Prospective students were directed to take remedial courses at a community college to better prepare them for success at the university. The higher admissions standards required a 3.2 GPA and an SAT score of at least 1000 for admittance in 2007. This increase was not without controversy. Critics argued it would place an even greater reliance on the already burgeoning local community college system.

Florida Atlantic University has established a work-study program between its colleges and cooperating businesses, industries, and government laboratories. This permits students to divide their programs into six-month periods of study at the University and on-the-job experience in the participating organizations for the duration of the course. Cooperative work-study classes normally start in the fall and spring semesters each academic year. FAU has exchange agreements with international schools in locations ranging from China to Germany. Students spend one or two semesters abroad, or they enroll in study tours or six-week summer programs. Arrangements must be made through the Office of International Programs.

The department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Florida Atlantic University was established and approved by the Florida Board of Regents in July 1985. The student body has grown from its original class of nine to a current census of over 85 students. The department has been accredited since July 1994, in the area of Speech-Language Pathology by the Committee on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

In addition to the Boca campus in southern Palm Beach County, Florida Atlantic operates a campus in northern Palm Beach County, in Jupiter. The John D. MacArthur Campus, named after businessman and philanthropist John D. MacArthur, was established in 1999 to serve residents of central and northern Palm Beach and southern Martin Counties. The MacArthur Campus occupies 45 acres (0.18 km²), upon which are eight classroom and office buildings, a library, a 500-seat auditorium, two residence halls, a dining hall, museum building, and utility plant.[62] The MacArthur Campus ... houses the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Scripps Florida. The campus serves approximately 1,435 students, or 5% of the university's student body.[49]
