Florida Atlantic University: Students
built 654 days ago
Since receiving its startup funding, Florida Atlantic has secured additional funds from other sources, including federal and private research grants. As a result, both centers have engaged in academic and industry partnerships, combining expertise in ocean engineering, marine biotechnology, functional genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. Researchers, scientists, and students at the centers are designing technologies to explore the sea, harvest renewable energy, discover new medicines, and develop new therapeutics to combat agents of bioterrorism.[37][38] As a result of this research, in 2007 the university and Lockheed Martin announced an exclusive licensing agreement to develop and produce a rapidly-deployable and autonomous mooring buoy system for military and scientific uses.[39]

FAU's commitment to the educational needs of all constituencies in its service area is evidenced by the work of the Division of Open University and Continuing Education (OUCE), and of the Lifelong Learning Society (LLS). Through OUCE, in excess of 24,000 students take classes, seminars and workshops in professional training, test preparation, personal growth, languages, investment management and many other pursuits. LLS, the largest organization of its kind in the country, serves 22,000 intellectually vital individuals over the age of 60. They take non-credit, personal enrichment courses in every conceivable area of human inquiry, designed specifically for this program and taught by regular FAU faculty. This organization and its activities have been so successful that active LLS chapters now exist on four FAU campuses.

The campus is located on 8 acres (0.03 km²) of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. SeaTech is home to university faculty and students engaged in sponsored ocean engineering research and development in the areas of acoustics, marine vehicles, hydrodynamics and physical oceanography, marine materials and nanocomposites.[63] The Dania Beach Campus serves approximately 45 students, roughly 0.17% of the university's total student body.[49]

The Student Alumni Board (SAB) is officially sanctioned by the FAU Student Government as a club. Primarily, the SAB acts as the parent organization to The Student Alumni Association, the prOWLers and the University Ambassadors. Ultimately, the Student Alumni Board exists to maintain a positive relationship between current FAU students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, and the surrounding communities. Members of SAB represent FAU students by reporting directly to the FAUNAA Board to maintain a continuous connection between the leadership of the Student Alumni and the National Alumni.
