Florence Rice The daughter of legendary sports journalist Grantland Rice, actress Florence Rice launched her stage career in the late '20s. In films from 1934, Rice was generally wasted in insipid "good girl" roles. The least prepossessing of these was the antiseptic heroine in the 1939 Marx Brothers comedy At the Circus; upon being introduced to the mischievous Marxes on the set, Rice was promptly locked in the lion's cage, where she quietly remained until the property man showed up. Spending her last professional years in B-productions at such studios as Columbia, Republic, and PRC, Florence Rice retired from films in 1943. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Florence Rice, an elderly black woman, looks straight into the camera. She remembers the look her daughter gave her the moment she was born. "That baby looked up as if to say, 'If you dont want me, I dont want you either.' " As an orphan in Harlem in the 1930s, Rice knew all about being unwanted. Sixteen and pregnant, she dreamed that this baby would be someone to finally make her feel necessary.
Rice never became a major figure in films, but achieved popularity in a number of screen pairings with Robert Young. Her most widely seen performances were in Double Wedding (1937), in which she was billed third in the cast credits behind William Powell and Myrna Loy, Sweethearts (1938) with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, and The Marx Brothers film At The Circus (1939).
Rice briefly aspired to a professional baseball career, which both his father, Bolling Rice, and grandfather opposed. In the mid-summer of 1901, Rice accepted a position at the Nashville Daily News, writing sports and covering the State Capitol and the Davidson County Courthouse. In 1902 Rice moved to the Atlanta Journal as sports editor. There he became an associate of Don Marquis, Frank Stanton, and Joel Chandler Harris. He ... met his future wife, Kate Hollis of Americus, Georgia. They married in 1906, and were the parents of one daughter, Florence.
Florence Rice When Florence Rice graduates from Holyoke Community College on Saturday, all eight of her sons - ages 3 to 19-will be watching. "They are my inspiration," said Rice, 39, who plans to go Mount Holyoke College in the fall.
