Florence Eldridge, who plays Fredric March's devoted wife in the film, was the actor's real-life wife. This was the seventh movie they appeared in together. The film and the play it was adapted from were based on the real-life 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial that took place in Dayton, Tennessee. Henry Drummond, Matthew Harrison Brady, reporter E. K. Hornbeck and teacher Bertram T. Cates were modeled after Clarence Darrow, William Jennings Bryan, Baltimore reporter H. L. Mencken and teacher John T. Scopes, respectively. In Paris maids Corinne (Beryl Mercer) and Marianne (Marion Byron) discuss the late husband Adolphe of Juliette Corton (Florence Eldridge). Gustave Corton (James Gleason) is irritated everyone calls Adolphe such a man and discharges Corinne. Hairdresser Leopold Trebel (Frank Fay) arrives and looks just like Adolphe. He does Juliette's hair, and she faints. Leopold kisses Marianne, and Corinne kisses Leopold. Originally a center of Roman provincial government and commerce, Florence in the Middle Ages became an important bishopric, a county nominally subject to the Holy Roman Emperor, and, by 1138, a commune. Its history throughout the early modern era was bound to the Medici family, who dominated it either unofficially or, after 1530, as lords. With the death of Gian Gastone de' Medici in 1737, Florence and its territory became a fief of the House of Lorraine.
