The Harvard University Herbaria, one of the editorial centers for the Flora of China Project, is the site for the Flora of China Web. The pages are maintained by Anthony R. Brach and Hong Song. The address (URL) for the FOC web is http://flora.huh.harvard.edu/china/. The web pages contain this regularly updated newsletter, introductory information, an alphabetical index to families, floristic treatments (databased, html, and pdf), interactive keys for identification, related papers, related searchable data, images, links to the FOC illustrations, and information on editorial centers and the people involved in the Project. The web site is widely visited and received the Golden Web Award in June 2004.

While Flora has a strong neighborhood vibe, the area is clearly in transition. This pioneering restaurant could become a symbolic anchor, much like San Francisco's Zuni Cafe did when it opened more than 25 years ago on what was then a depressing stretch of Market Street.

Flora went to Lakeville schools, was an active member of the Bremen Church of the Brethren, and enjoyed Camp Mack. Her educational journey continued at Manchester College majoring in music and education and receiving the B.S. degree. She received her masters and Ph.D. from Purdue University. Her work after public schools for eight years was at Purdue University for 32 years, and includes teaching at the University of California at Davis, Jio Tong University in Shanghai, China, and the Viscosa Federal University in Brazil. As Full Professor, she directed 23 graduate students’ research and taught graduate/ undergraduate courses. Research was on poverty and quality of life issues.

Flora went on to contribute to some of the greatest recording of the seventies - Carlos Santana, Hermeto Pascoal, Gil Evans, Chick Corea and Mickey Hart all benefiting from her vocal and arranging skills. In the mid-Eighties, Flora and Airto resumed their musical partnership to record two albums for Concord - "Humble People" and "The Magicians" for which she received Grammy nominations. In 1992 she went one better by singing on two Grammy winning albums - "Planet Drum" with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart (Best World Music Album) and the Dizzy Gillespie "United Nations Orchestra" (Best Jazz Album).

The Flora was published in a multi-volume series beginning in 1909 and continuing steadily through 1940. Work on the Flora slowed after Jepson's death in 1946, with Volume 4 Part 2 by Lauramay T. Dempster, appearing in 1979 after a long hiatus. The Flora contains exceptionally detailed taxonomic treatments and original line drawings; for many taxa in California, the Flora contains the most comprehensive description of morphological characteristics, habitats, and ecology available. Unfortunately, this great work was never completed and is now out-of-print, although there are a limited number of full sets still available through the Jepson Herbarium.
