Flash Memory: Systems

To use the Flash memory card, it must have been formatted on the same type of system. To boot from the Flash memory card, a Cisco 7000 or Cisco 7010 router using an RP must be using CiscoIOS Release 11.0 or later boot ROMs. When the Flash memory card is shipped installed in an RSP-based system, the Flash memory card contains an image. When the card is shipped installed in an RP-based system, the card is shipped formatted. When the card is shipped as a spare, it is shipped unformatted.

Linear flash memory stores and sends data in a linear fashion. Because the computer receives data in blocks, the linear data must first be translated into blocks of data. This is achieved by the Flash File System (FFS) or Flash Translation Layer (FTL) software. NOR-based flash is generally used in a linear PC card.

Xilinx began its design collaboration with flash memory leader STMicroelectronics in 2002 to develop its single PROM family with all the high-performance features needed to configure a wide range of FPGAs at a very low cost. Xilinx Platform Flash PROMs provide customers with a competitively priced high performance, system-level drop-in solution that reduces the amount of board space required for configuration, and offers a complete 1 Mb to 32 Mb PROM density solutions. Further details on the benefits of the Xilinx Platform Flash solution whitepaper is available at http://direct.xilinx.com/bvdocs/whitepapers/wp253.pdf .

FLASH memory and EEPROM are non-volatile memory solutions that are widely used in embedded systems applications. They are available both on-chip and as external, stand-alone memory. The Keil 8051, 251, and C16x/ST10 development tools allow you to write software for all FLASH-based chips and microcontrollers that are available.

[T]o realize the advantages of flash memory, the operating system has to know it’s there and know what to do with it. Apple, as usual, is silent on the subject. But the chances look good that the Mac will get flash storage in 2007.
