Flash Memory: Samsung Electronics

South Korean-based chipmaker Samsung has announced it will begin mass-producing a new 16 GB flash memory chip using 51nm process technology. As the demand for video content grows, Samsung expects to promote the chip for storage in mid- to high-range digital cameras, Daniel Longfield, an analyst with Frost Sullivan, told TechNewsWorld.

With the growing demand for cellular phones, digital cameras, and MP3 players, the small-form-factor flash memory will surge in shipping volume over the next few years. The technology advancements such as die shrinkage, multilevel storage architectures, and better software controllers will push the common flash density from 32MB to 128MB and 256MB. It is unlikely that one common standard will dominate the flash market. Thus, watch out when you buy the portable electronics devices. Be sure you know what type of memory is used inside.

Flash memory is different from RAM because RAM is volatile (not permanent). When power is turned off, RAM loses all its data. Flash can keep its data intact, with no power at all. A hard drive ... is permanent (non-volatile) storage, but it is bulky and fragile. Flash memory is much slower than RAM or hard drives. But it is great for small electronics because it is small and it has no moving parts.

For the most part, flash memory has been used in small audio gadgets such as iPods and in portable USB drives. But a recent flurry of announcements from flash chip makers Intel and Samsung, among others, show that the technology has reached a point at which it is finally economical to integrate a small amount of flash memory--from 128 megabytes to 8 gigabtyes--into laptops and desktops as a supplement to the magnetic hard drive. The benefit, say chip makers, is faster boot times, faster application start-ups, and impressive power savings.

Over at KES 2007, Samsung has been busy showing off its newest camcorder, a unit that actually records to both mini DVDs or internal flash memory. The VM-DX10 allows users to store footage on a three-inch DVD or on the 4GB of flash memory within, and it ... boasts a 2.7-inch touch panel, 3D Noise Reduction Filter, 26x zoom, and Hyper Image Stabilizer. The unit is slated to land in Korea next month in either black or white motifs, and while it sure is tiny, the ₩700,000 ($763) asking price seems a bit steep considering how limited 4GB really is. Check out a few more looks after the break.

Demand for data flash memory will soar to 235 bln megabytes 2005 and 627 bln in 2006, when Samsung will supply almost half the market. Multilevel cell technology will become the leading memory type by Q2 2006, according to Gartner. Tags: Memory, flash memory Blog posts 2006-03-19
