1. A Good Woman -- No Importance
   All told, A Good Woman is in much better shape than the recent dreadful remake of The Importance of Being Earnest. There's a certain comedy in a girl as buxom as Scarlett Johansson being prudish, but wouldn't she dress a bit more modestly if she were? After wearing a white satin dress that looks as if it were spray-painted on her, Meg complains about women who wear "too much rouge and not enough clothing."
2. Walter Huston -- Humphrey Bogart
   Huston made three documentaries for the United States Army during World War II, for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit and was promoted to the position of major. Huston's work with Humphrey Bogart—who played the leading role in The Maltese Falcon—... produced such film classics as Key Largo (1948) and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948). For his performance in the latter, Huston's father won the Academy Award for best supporting actor. Bogart himself won the Academy Award for best actor for his work under Huston's direction in The African Queen (1951). Huston also successfully transferred to the screen works by such respected American writers as Stephen Crane (The Red Badge of Courage, 1951), Arthur Miller (The Misfits, 1961), Tennessee Williams (The Night of the Iguana, 1964), Flannery O'Connor (Wise Blood, 1979), and by the British writer Malcolm Lowry (Under the Volcano, 1984). His last completed films were Prizzi's Honor (1985), in which his daughter Angelica Huston won an Academy Award for best supporting actress, and The Dead (1987), which was based on a short story by the Irish writer James Joyce, adapted for the screen by Huston's son Tony, and which also starred his daughter Angelica.
3. Sling Blade -- Characters
   SLING BLADE is the story of Karl Childers, a simple-minded man who is released from a mental institution after serving 25 years for murder. Karl returns to his hometown, where he tries to start a new life for himself and is immediately befriended by a troubled boy named Frank. Frank’s widowed mother Linda allows Karl to live in her garage, but Linda’s abusive boyfriend makes life a living hell for anyone within his proximity. SLING BLADE unfolds at a leisurely pace, giving each character a chance to fully develop as the film draws to its inevitable conclusion. Wonderful performances abound in SLING BLADE, thanks to a director who seems more than willing to let his actors flex their muscles. Lucas Black is a true standout.

7. Sling Blade -- Billy Bob Thornton
   In ``Sling Blade,'' a first-rate drama opening today at the Lumiere, Karl is brilliantly played by Billy Bob Thornton, a writer and actor who ... makes his directing debut. It's a breathtaking triple whammy from an actor who has appeared in small films (``One False Move'') and occasional TV series (``Hearts Afire'') but had never done anything to indicate the haunting power he displays here.
8. Edgar Allen Poe -- Works
   As for Poe's criticism of fiction and verse, there is an intersection with the often-overlooked depth of his work. Poe developed a theory of composition that he applied to both his short stories and his poems. Its most basic principle was that insofar as short fiction and poetry were concerned, the writer should aim at creating a single and total psychological/spiritual effect upon the reader. The theme or plot of the piece is always subordinate to the author's calculated construction of a single, intense mood in the reader's or listener's mind, be it melancholy, suspense, or horror. There are no extra elements in Poe, no subplots, no minor characters, and no digressions except those that show the madness of deranged first-person ("I") narrators. Ultimately, Poe took writing to be a moral task that worked not through teaching lessons, but in simultaneously stimulating his readers' mental, emotional, and spiritual faculties through texts of absolute integrity.
9. Bruce Springsteen -- New Jersey
   Well, Bruce Springsteen was Jon Landau's future. Over the next couple of years, Landau insinuated himself into Bruce's artistic life and consciousness (while remaining on the Rolling Stone masthead) until he became Springsteen's producer, manager, and full-service Svengali. Unlike the down-on-their-luck Springsteens of Freehold, N.J., Landau hailed from the well-appointed suburbs of Boston and had earned an honors degree in history from Brandeis. He filled his new protégé's head with an American Studies syllabus heavy on John Ford, Steinbeck, and Flannery O'Connor. At the same time that he intellectualized Bruce, he anti-intellectualized him. Rock music was transcendent, Landau believed, because it was primitive, not because it could be avant-garde.
