Fish Oil
built 634 days ago
Any unsaturated oil, including fish oil, can become rancid if exposed to heat, light or oxygen. Rancid oils are very unhealthy because they contain free radical molecules that damage your cells. To prevent possible free radical damage, you should ... take an antioxidant formula that includes vitamin E.

Sears ... recommends in his book specific blood tests that can be taken to help determine how much fish oil you actually need. And he discusses potential (but rare) side effects of very high dosages and what you can do about them. (You can purchase this book at your local bookstore, through Zone Labs, Inc. (see below), or through amazon.com.)

As you communicate with other IgAN patients, you will undoubtedly find that some are on fish oil, and others aren't. This is because some nephrologists recommend it to some of their patients, while others aren't convinced of its usefulness. A third group will recommend it, but not too convincingly (on the basis that it can't hurt). In some cases, there can ... be specific reasons not to recommend fish oil. Because of the high doses involved (for IgAN, the dosages are higher than what you will see on the label when you buy fish oil) and the possibility of contraindications, we strongly recommend that you not take fish oil on your own initiative, but rather consult with your nephrologist.

It may take several weeks of fish oil use before you notice an improvement in your symptoms and/or blood tests that are monitored by your prescriber. You should contact your health care professional for advice prior to prolonged use of fish oils.

The amount of N-3 oils varies in different types of fish. It is commonly believed that only salt water fish contain significant levels of N-3 fatty acid. This is not true. Freshwater fish from cold northern waters, including Lake Superior, can have significant levels as well (Want et al. 1990).
