Fish Oil: Studies
built 634 days ago
Much has been written about the benefits of fish oil for the heart. So it came as a surprise last week when a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that, contrary to earlier beliefs, taking fish-oil supplements did not reduce the risk of serious abnormal heart rhythms, the kind responsible for sudden cardiac death. You might be tempted to seize on this finding as yet another failure of a popular dietary supplement to protect health. That would be a mistake, because the study is of limited relevance to the general population. The benefits of fish oil are well established, not just for heart health but ... for optimum functioning of both body and mind.

The discovery that fish oil may have unique benefits in the fight against coronary heart disease has stimulated a tremendous amount of research which this publication summarizes. Although the subject is complex, the study of fish oils is very worthwhile because it provides a totally new perspective on the relationship of diet to coronary heart disease.

[I]n the May 1999 Archives of General Psychiatry, Andrew Stoll, M.D., and colleagues reported a study of fish oil in 30 manic-depressive patients. Sixty-four percent of those who took 10 grams of fish oil per day for four months reported a marked improvement in their symptoms. By contrast, only 19 percent of those receiving the placebo benefited.

The still-in-progress North American IgA Nephropathy Study should help provide some answers with regard to fish oil. It is a randomized, placebo-controlled, multi-center trial with the Administrative Coordinating Center located at Columbia Hospital at Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that alternate-day prednisone or daily fish oil supplements will retard or prevent the decline in renal function in children, adolescents, and young adults with moderate to severe IgAN.

The behavior of children in a recent study vastly improved when they were given 6 capsules of fish oil per day, even more than children being prescribed Ritalin. Restlessness and school performance improved significantly from omega-3 supplementation and concentration improved by 33%! Even after 30 weeks of taking fish oil supplements, the children continued to show increasing improvements, suggesting that taking fish oil even longer would have had even greater benefits.
