Fish Oil: Omega-3 Fatty Acids
built 606 days ago
It appears Omega-3 fatty acids, in the form of Fish Oils, are able to help patients who have mild Alzheimier's disease. Since current drugs used for Alzheimer's disease are not very helpful, and potentially dangerous, perhaps doctors should initially try omega-3 fatty acids in mild cases of AD rather than cholinesterase inhibitors.

Fish oil is a new dietary supplement containing health giving fish oils in a special formulation. Fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids have been used successfully for the treatment of a variety of inflammatory diseases. When prepared properly to contain eicosopentanoic and docosahexanoic acids, fish oils have shown considerable success in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Recently, a very important study of the benefit of fish oils in Crohn’s disease (regional ileitis inflammatory bowel disease) was reported by Dr. Beluzzi and his colleagues in the New England Journal of Medicine, June 13, 1996 (Effect of an Enteric-Coated Fish-Oil Preparation of Relapses in Crohn’s Disease, Belluzzi, A, et al, New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 334, No. 24, 1557-1560).

Fish oil may even prove beneficial in preventing and treating certain cancers. In one study, researchers had 25 women with breast cancer eat a low-fat, high-fiber diet and take 10,000 milligrams of fish-oil supplements daily—far more than anyone would think of taking under normal circumstances. After three months, the omega-3 fatty acids stored in the women’s breasts increased. This is significant because animal studies have shown that omega-3’s delay the development of cancer and can inhibit tumor growth.

Fish oil has many names. One of the most common is omega-3 fatty acid or its scientific abbreviation, N-3. N3 fatty acids are found mostly in fish, but are contained in other foods as well. Fish oil is the best food source of these fatty acids.

Consuming high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish oil, may help stop cancerous prostate cells from spreading and becoming potentially lethal, a new British study finds. Published in the British Journal of Cancer, the study’s findings are cause for hope among some public health researchers, who estimate that 543,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year. In the current study, researchers at England’s Paterson Institute found that men with prostate cancer who ate a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer from the spread of tumor cells outside of the prostate gland. As a result, prostate cancer among such men was easier to control and treat through either surgery or chemotherapy.

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, one of the two main classes of essential fatty acids (omega-6 fatty acids are the other). Essential fatty acids are special fats that the body needs for optimum health. Some investigators have found that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil have various effects that tend to reduce risk of heart disease and strokes. However, researchinto whether use of fish oil actually prevents these diseases, while somewhat positive, remains incomplete and somewhat inconsistent. Fish oil has ... shown promise as an anti-inflammatory treatment for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual pain, and lupus. In addition, it may be helpful for various psychiatric conditions.
