Fish Oil: Martek Dha

Japanese researchers now add to the evidence of the importance of DHA by their discovery that supplementation with DHA-rich fish oil eliminates stress-induced aggressive behaviour among university students. Their trial involved 41 medical students who were randomized to receive fish oil capsules providing 1.5 – 1.8 grams/day of DHA or soybean oil based placebo capsules. The trial was started during the last days of summer vacation in September and was completed during the highly stressful exam time in December. Administration of the P-F (picture-frustration) test in December revealed that students who had taken the placebo capsules for the 3-month trial period showed a substantial increase in aggression whereas those who had supplemented with DHA actually exhibited less aggression than they had at the end of their summer vacation.

Fish oil contains a special type of polyunsaturated fat called omega-3 fatty acids. They are ... called n-3 PUFAs. There are two types of fat in fish oil: eicoapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA).
Fish oils are made in the body from a fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an omega-3 fatty acid found predominantly in flaxseed oil (... known as linseed) and hemp seed oil. Green leafy vegetables, soybeans, walnuts, and canola oil have small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial because they provide fluidity to cell membranes and improve communication between brain cells. Omega-3s also reduce the clotting ability of platelets, thus potentially decreasing the incidence of heart attacks and strokes. Two very important omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) which together are found in fish oils.

Unlike fish oil, flaxseed oil does not contain EPA and DHA, two omega-3s that play a crucial role in health and well being. Flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (LNA). However, the conversion is quite inefficient especially among the elderly, some infants and children, diabetics, and people with high blood pressure. Studies show it can take ten times as much or more LNA to produce an equivalent amount of the EPA and DHA found in fish oil. Therefore you need to take considerably more flaxseed oil than fish oil.
The usual oral dose of fish oil for use in hypertriglyceridemia is about 5 grams of combined EPA/DHA daily. The values expressed in this section refer to the amounts of EPA plus DHA. The actual weight of the capsule is typically much higher. Labels should be checked in order to determine the actual EPA/DHA content. The daily intake should be taken in divided doses; the supplements are best tolerated with meals. The usual dose for hypertensives that have not previously been medicated is about 3 grams of EPA/DHA daily.

Fish oil capsules contain two omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexenoic (DHA). Like aspirin, they make platelets in the blood less likely to stick together and may reduce inflammatory processes in the blood vessels.
