The First Battalion was reactivated 8 March 1946 at Tsingtao, China, and assigned to the 6th Marine Division. It participated in the occupation of North China, March to September 1946. Then reassigned during April 1946 to the 3rd Marine Brigade. Reassigned during June 1946 to the 1st Marine Division and relocated during September 1946 to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and reassigned to the 2nd Marine Division. Deactivated 18 November 1947.
January 16th, 2001, Company C, First Battalion, 136th Minnesota Viking Infantry Division celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their induction into Federal Service and involvement in the Korean War. Company C was organized in 1947. The unit first trained in the Senior High School gym and held their meetings in the City Council Chambers above the fire hall. For nine years after, they met in the Field House at Memorial Park. The long promised National Guard Armory was completed in 1956 and became the permanent home for the Guard's men and women.
The First Battalion Eighth Infantry won nine campaign streamers for action in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970, participating in operations Sam Houston, Francis Marion, Don Quin, and Paul Revere III. The Vietnamese Government awarded the battalion the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Civil Action Medal First Class. Alpha and Charlie Companies were awarded a cluster to their presidential unit citations for extraordinary heroism in the Republic of Vietnam. Companies A and C sought out, engaged and decisively defeated an overwhelmingly larger force by deploying small, isolated patrols and conducting company and platoon size reconnaissance-in-force operations.
Due to the crisis in Canada during the winter of 1775-76, the various companies of the First Battalion were dispatched to that theater individually, as each became fit for service. The first to depart was that of Captain Dorsey, on January 22, quickly followed by Jones' Company, and then others. Each unit marched from Philadelphia to New York City, where they were transported by ship up the North (or Hudson) River as far as Albany. From there, the Pennsylvanians moved northward via Lake Champlain into Canada; by March 30 four companies of 225 men had reached the American lines around Quebec. The remainder of the battalion, in two detachments, was still en route; Colonel De Haas accompanied the last of these.

Having a strong conviction in the motto, Khushki - o - Tari meaning 'by land and sea' the officers and men of the unit showed their courage in many battles fought inside and outside India. The battalion won 31 battle honours which is the highest for any Army unit in the world. The first battle honour Sholinghur won in 1781.
