Firehouse Gallery on a Friday Evening High atop the Firehouse lives its original bell. Soon after September 11, 2001, Burlington City Arts learned that the Shelburne Museum hoped to gift the original bell back to the Firehouse tower. Ravaged by years of water, damage, a re-engineering and renovation of the tower as well as a concentrated fundraising effort took place. The bell was hoisted back into it's home on September 12, 2002. As a symbol of the services provided by the Firehouse’s inhabitants throughout history, the bell’s return seemed to confirm the building’s connection to the community. In addition, the Firehouse has worked extensively with children and teenagers involved in public school performing arts programs. Here the goal has been to offer instruction and performances by professional artists who serve both as role models and mentors.
Historically known as the Good Will Engine Company, Firehouse 13 was built in 1856. The Good Will Engine Company was originally the Providence Fire Department’s training school for cadets. The second floor was the living quarters and the third floor was a meeting hall and tactical training room. Horse drawn fire trucks and stables occupied the first floor into the early 20th Century. Standing four stories high, including the bell tower, Firehouse 13 was a prominent building on a hill overlooking downtown when erected. A mere half century later, the firehouse was dwarfed by the construction of massive industrial mills that stand adjacent today.
