The fire, which destroyed 260 homes and forced 25,000 people to evacuate, is the first major disaster here since Los Alamos National Laboratory became the historic development site of the first atomic bomb in 1945. Prosecutors granted Kelley and Agranoff immunity from prosecution when they invoked their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination, indicating authorities don't believe they lit the fire. "There's no reason why they wouldn't testify," prosecutor John Parmley said when successfully asking a federal judge to hold them in civil contempt. "The grand jury wants to hear from them. Their testimony would be helpful to an ongoing investigation." The two could be jailed for nearly a year. The grand jury investigating the case is scheduled to be dismissed Dec. 27, but could be extended another six months.
