Fire Trucks: Departments
built 632 days ago
One stop beauty shopping at MakeUp.com (Edinburg) - Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department has installed a new system installed that allows fire trucks to give themselves green lights en route to emergencies. With a high-tech flick of a switch inside any of the city's 17 trucks, a signal is transmitted through a Global Positioning System (GPS) to satellites that tell the other end of the system - posted on ten intersections throughout the city - not only how far away the fire truck is, but ... how quickly it is moving. The system will change the light before fire crews reach the intersection and then return the crossroads to normal rotation after the truck safely passes through. The system should help alleviate the common panic drivers feel when stopped at an intersection with a screaming, flashing truck coming up behind them. Now, instead of drivers making the mistake of inching into the intersection - into oncoming traffic - to make way for fire crews, cars traveling the same direction as the trucks can enjoy the same green light and safely move out of the way. So far, the system has cost the city about $115,000.
The Longview Fire Department recently held a dedication to celebrate the completion of a 6,000-square-foot facility that will house vehicles and equipment the department has purchased with about $1.3 million in federal aid. Longview Economic Development Corp. provided the $349,604 for construction of the Regional Response Building that will provide a climate-controlled environment for temperature-sensitive equipment. The building at Fire Station No. 2, 708 Eastman Road... will be the central location for the special operations team and its resources. Funds also were used to establish the Regional Command Center, which will serve as a communications center with surrounding communities in times of emergency.
Ladder 971 Whenever the subject of a fire department arises, interest invariably turns to the fire trucks and other equipment found within the department. Perhaps this is so because it is the trucks that garner so much attention around town, whether just riding through the streets or responding with lights and sirens to an emergency call. While on the surface it may seem like such abiding interest in the trucks is a superficial thing, that is by no means the case. Carrboro's fire trucks represent a significant financial investment for the town, and it is right that the citizens, as well as the members of the department, take tremendous pride in them. They are your trucks, and they represent the community's investment in the safety and welfare of its citizens.

Henderson's new fire station on West Main Street is about one-third complete. "It's looking so good. They have the roof on it, and all the metal structure is up. It'll probably be finished in August," said Mayor John "Buzz" Fullen. The new 29,000-square-foot station will replace the Central Fire Station, which is across the street from the construction site. The station, which has about 4,000 square feet, is too small and is outdated, Fullen said, adding that the fire department's ladder truck is being housed in a warehouse because there's not enough room at the Central Fire Station.
As training officer for the Fort Belvoir Fire Department, Dodge has acquired an expertise on airport emergency operations because of the Belvoir department's responsibilities at Davison Army Airfield. The morning of Sept. 11 the 28-year veteran was conducting training for the Fort Myer crew on precisely that topic.
