Population shifts in Longview have prompted city officials to rethink the locations of some of the city's fire stations. With heavy growth in the northern part of the city, construction has begun on one new station that will replace an old station. A consultant identified fire Station No. 4 at 2400 South High St. as needing to be relocated because of an overlap in coverage with Station No. 3 at 1133 E. Birdsong St. The new No. 4 station is in the early stages of construction in the northwestern part of the city on George Richey Road. The consultant ... recommended that stations No. 6 and No. 7 be relocated to correspond with the northern movement. No new locations have been identified for those stations, which are at 1515 Judson Road and 2811 Gilmer Road.

The San Diego U.S. Attorney's Office, along with the FBI and agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is investigating an Aug 1, 2003, arson fire in University City. The fire caused $50 million in damage to the nearly finished La Jolla Crossroads apartment and condominium complex, and authorities have offered a $100,000 reward.
