Fire Island National Seashore: Parks
built 222 days ago
In 1938 the park facilities and settlements on Fire Island were devastated by a hurricane. As a result, what was to become Robert Moses State Park received a massive overhaul. New land formed by accretion on the western end of the island was ceded from the Federal to the State government. Sand was pumped onshore to build up part of the island to a height of 18 feet above mean sea level - the height engineers estimated as necessary to protect park facilities from future storm damage. Even though this was a massive undertaking, the park reopened with new a new layout and bathhouse facilities within a year. The Robert Moses Causeway connecting the barrier to Captree State Park and the mainland was completed in 1964.

There are only two bridges to Fire Island National Seashore. The Robert Moses Causeway on the western end of Fire Island leads to parking lots at Robert Moses State Park. The William Floyd Parkway leads to Smith Point County Park on the eastern end of Fire Island, where there are ... parking lots. Parking fees are charged at both lots. There are no public roads on the island itself. Park Headquarters is located in Patchogue, NY.

Fire Island is accessible in a number of ways. For leisurely day trips use the Smith Point parking lot (no overnight parking permitted) on the eastern flank of the National Seashore Wilderness Area. The put-in is located at a small beach at the eastern end of the parking lot. For more information on getting there and camping regulations please visit www.nps.gov/fiis.

At least 2.2 million people spend time within the boundaries of Fire Island National Seashore every year. Almost 800,000 people annually visit park facilities. July and August are the busiest months. Sunny weekends are the busiest days.

[V]isitors are not considered visitors to the park if they access the park via one of the villages on the island. These people's primary destination is deemed to be the village, not the park. But it is to the villages that almost all the ferries go, and that is how beach-goers get there. Because of this budgetary device, FINS is vastly underfunded.
