Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, this game will be action-oriented and the may be the darkest Final Fantasy. Nomura has stated that he aims to create previously unseen "tricky" battle sequences, reminiscent of Advent Children. Nomura has revealed that the game will play like a more realistic version of Kingdom Hearts with some elements of a third-person shooter similar to Dirge of Cerberus. Various websites have speculated that the game might be released sometime in 2009, as it's been confirmed that XIII won't be released until at least mid-2008 and Versus is currently trailing behind it.

Leaving aside the new platform and technology, Final Fantasy XIII will see the return of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, but with a twist. For Final Fantasy X, battle director (and Front Mission mastermind) Toshirou Tsuchida added a strategic component to the traditional ATB, creating what was dubbed CTB in the process. In case of Final Fantasy XIII, the development team plans a more speedy take on the good old ATB system, which will include a traditional input scheme for commands. The battle system will ... include new effects, such as slowing down the flow of time. Prominently featured in the upper-right hand corner of the battle screen is a circle-shaped gauge. Once this gauge is filled up, players will gain access to an Overclock mode.

There was a new Final Fantasy XIII trailer with Lightning fighting and a movie scene where Shiva turns into a motorcycle. At the end there was a girl in pink looking over a canyon with dinosaur-like creatures.
