Final Fantasy Xii Revenant Wings

Using the word Revenant to title this, the first spin-off videogame to Final Fantasy XII's bright universe, seems something of a misnomer. With full-page advertisements in Viz this month proclaiming the original PlayStation 2 game's arrival to Europe, the world of Ivalice has hardly been gone long enough to warrant a vainglorious comeback.

It’s worth mentioning that Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, recently released on PSP, is a completely different beast. While Revenant Wings is real-time, Tactics is turn-based. While Revenant Wings is a reasonable challenge, Tactics will beat you so hard you’ll be eating through a straw for a month.

Directing this endeavor is Motomu Toriyama, who served as director for Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. Other key members of the Revenant Wings development team include SaGa mastermind Akitoshi Kawazu as executive producer with additional production by Fantasy Earth producer Yasuhito Watanabe.

Despite the in-house competition, the first Final Fantasy XII spin-off, Revenant Wings, has nonetheless sold impressively. Given the dedication of its fans, that's hardly any indication of its quality, but Revenant Wings does mark another step in diversifying the series.

The game will be scored by the same composer that worked on Final Fantasy XII, Hitoshi Sakimoto, so if you liked what you heard there, expect more of the same. It is unclear whether voice acting will be done by the original English cast (or if there will be any at all), but one might assume that since not much time has passed, the voice actors would be willing to reprise their original (albeit younger) roles.

A fine alternative RTS that expands upon an already fantastic universe and one of Final Fantasy's most compelling stories and casts to date. But while their grip on the gameplay end of things has improved dramatically over Heroes of Mana, Wings makes a few mistakes that keep things a little less strategy and a little more mob slaughter.
