The music of Final Fantasy XI was scored by Nobuo Uematsu, Naoshi Mizuta, and Kumi Tanioka. The expansion packs were scored by Mizuta alone after Tanioka left to pursue other projects and Uematsu left Square Enix. A holiday score titled Jeuno -Starlight Celebration- could be heard in the city of Jeuno during mid to late December. It was first introduced on December 2004 and has been played each December since then. The music can ... be heard while in the area known as Dynamis—Tavnazia. A vocal, Distant Worlds, performed by Izumi Masuda, composed by Uematsu and arranged by Mizuta, was later released in a July 2005 patch and was released on the Japan iTunes Music Store of September 13, 2005.

Players from around the world control the fate of the world of Vana'diel as they volunteer for missions to defend its nations and people. Customizable characters allow players to tailor physical attributes and skills to suit individual tastes. Adventures span over 100 different areas such as mountains, deserts, oceans, castles and dungeons. Environments take on a life of their own as time and weather constantly change. A few options are currently available for prospective players of Final Fantasy XI to sample the game. The first of these offered by Square-Enix was a free 30 day trial for the game included with the purchase of an Alienware PC or a Logitech computer accessory. The trial offered codes for downloading the core game and registration with PlayOnline and Final Fantasy XI. This promotion is no longer proactively offered, though the codes provided for these trials are still valid.

Upon merging, Square and Enix unanimously agreed that Final Fantasy was Square's big draw-card, and Dragon Quest was Enix'. In Japan... Dragon Quest is bigger than Final Fantasy, so Wada has decided that Dragon Quest 9, the next major release in the series, would be released without any major internal competition this year so as not to wound sales.
