Final Fantasy Tactics Advance: Characters
built 646 days ago
North American boxart There are 25 classes in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Each job class has exclusive equipment and abilities; the only way to use and master abilities is to join the class in question and equip a specific item, a system similar to that found in Final Fantasy IX. Most items that can be equipped have various job-specific abilities assigned them. These abilities are available for use only while that item is equipped; ... abilities can be mastered by fighting in battles. When a battle is completed, characters will receive Ability Points (AP) distributed over their currently equipped abilities. Once a target amount of AP has been accumulated for a given ability, the character will master that ability.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is pretty much a follow-up to the popular PlayStation game from some five years ago. And in every way, from tactical battles to story to character development, the title carries the Final Fantasy brand.

GameSpot has named Final Fantasy Tactics as one of its Greatest Games of All Time[59]รข€”the first Final Fantasy game to be so honored. However, its legacy remains fairly obscure compared to Final Fantasy VII... released for the PlayStation that year. The intricate plot was also the strength of the game as reviewers found it to be more in-depth, with numerous plot twists. Even during battle sequences, the story unfolds to create a serious atmosphere of the plot, even with simple and "cute" character design.[58][3] However, IGN found that the game's plot was confusing at times, and that the item system was repetitive.[58] The game's localization effort was criticized by reviewers as poorly written, being rife with grammatical mistakes that almost stopped players from enjoying the storyline.[3]

Squaresoft brings its popular Final Fantasy franchise to the Game Boy Advance in the form of strategic warfare. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance trails the story of a young boy named Marche who is magically transported from his sleepy modern-time home to a strange kingdom where magic and adventure reign supreme. Players control a set of troops who specialize in various fighting, healing, magic, and archery skills (or job classes). Strategically positioning characters on the battle map, and calculating offensive advances are the keys to success. Two players can battle and trade items with the aid of the GBA link cable.

[I]t's this that's the meat of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Battles take place in an angled perspective across a variety of terrain, and players will have to choose among their clan which characters will enter the fight. It's always a one-on-one battle, with players combatting against a computer controlled team; characters take turns, moving across the grid landscape and attacking each other until the task is complete...usually wiping out the entire clan of the other side does the trick. Nearly every move nets the characters experience points, so it's important that players bring in weaker clan members to a battle, even if it's just to use items, or hit and run. Like Final Fantasy or the bazillion of other RPG game designs, experience points will level up characters and enhance their abilities.

final-fantasy-tactics-advance-3.jpg (20677 bytes) The story of FFTA is one thing that will remain traditional to the Final Fantasy series. You start out a schoolboy who gets into a snowball fight with the school bully and stumble upon an ancient book entitled “Final Fantasy” (what are the odds?). The characters begin reading the mysterious book, then find themselves submerged in a magical world filled with treacherous lands and bewildering creatures.
