Final Fantasy III serves its purpose by introducing an unknown chapter to fans and doing so in a very respectable fashion. There are things that could have been better, sure. SquareEnix could have put a little more time in modernizing the battle system, animation, menus, and save system. That would have put two cherries on top of a sweet, tasty treat. Even with all of these little kinks, Final Fantasy III is great. It’s got that classic replay value.

The long and largely successful Final Fantasy saga can be a bit intimidating. Even if you haven’t played any of these games before you will most likely have been hearing about it for a good 10 years. As someone who hadn’t lost his Final Fantasy cherry, slotting in the cart felt a bit like opening an old old book with an ancient history and a language and characters all its own. The game creaks under the weight of all those other games and experiences and expectations. The question is does it rise to the occasion and distinguish itself as a modern classic, or does it buckle under all that weight.

After more than a year sporting the same layout, Final Fantasy Crystals is finally revamped. Bits and pieces of Version 7 remain, but Version 8 features a stronger, more professional and cohesive design. Navigation is ... made easier while ads are now integrated almost seamlessly to the layout.

The sound made major breakthroughs in Final Fantasy III. Things like playing the piano could be heard, or chocobo's Wark. The music, though seeming a bit corny at times, was a perfect fit to the game.
