Final Fantasy: He Poos Clouds Around this time last year, Owen Pallett-- a touring sideman and string arranger for the Arcade Fire and Hidden Cameras-- released Has a Good Home, his first record as Final Fantasy. For an album assembled in approximately six days, it contained a surprising amount of good material: elegant, sophisticated, and generally winsome pop songs constructed from violin and loop pedals. A year later, Squaresoft has yet to send a cease-and-desist order, and Pallett's emerged with something far grander than his modest debut.

Final Fantasy: He Poos Clouds Those tracks eventually formed Has a Good Home, his Final Fantasy debut. Produced by Leon Taheny, the album is a collection of wildly inventive songs-- some with an inevitable chamber-pop sensibility ("None of You Will Ever See a Penny"), others skirting closer to the nu-folk of Joanna Newsom ("Your Light Is Spent", and his cover of "Peach, Plum, Pear")-- all featuring his violin bowed, plucked, and looped into a sound that is at once ambitious and intimate. But Has a Good Home doesn't reflect his live shows. Most of the album's songs "are impossible to play live," he says, because of they're too complicated for one person to replicate on stage.
This morning's power breakfast was one slice of toast and one can of Final Fantasy Potion. Once again, Square Enix has teamed with Osaka beverage maker Suntory to create a "potion" promotion to promote FF. This time around, the drink is for the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy VII. more
