In Final Fantasy, the tale begins when four young warriors, each possessing a Crystal, are summoned to bring the world back to a harmonious elemental balance. During their voyage, they discover a nefarious entity has created turmoil in the structure of time in order to take control of the world, causing the heroes to travel to places they never imagined possible.

At first, Final Fantasy was merely one project among many for Pallett, who stayed busy with Les Mouches, the Hidden Cameras, Picastro, and the Jim Guthrie Band. He ... co-wrote the string arrangements for the Arcade Fire's Funeral, and his work with the band inspired his song "This Is the Dream of Win and Regine". In 2004, Pallett toured as part of the Vinyl Café, a CBC radio program showcasing Canadian musicians. The show skews toward a demographic slightly older than Pallett's typical audience, so he wrote some "pretty pop that would appeal to them" instead of songs about "cocks and legends" with lots of screaming.

Final Fantasy VII ... popularized the inclusion of extremely difficult optional bosses. Late in the game, a series of powerful monsters called weapons appear; the player must confront several of them during the plot, but two (Ruby weapon and Emerald weapon) can only be encountered if the player chooses to fight them. The gameplay challenge presented by the two optional bosses actually exceeds the challenge of the game's final script-oriented boss fights. Ruby weapon, for instance, can instantly and unpreventably kill any character with one of its attacks, and has exactly ten times as many Hit Points (HP) as the final boss, while Emerald weapon can potentially kill all three characters with one attack (an attack which deals damage directionally proportionate to the number of materia orbs each character currently possesses), and has more than twelve times as much HP as the final boss. These weapons only appeared in the NTSC, PAL and International versions of the game, being distinctly absent in the Japanese original.

Being one of the first popular console RPGs ever, Final Fantasy's story was highly original. With many little quests and things to do, the game created an almost perfect fairy-tale atmosphere, with dancing brooms and sunken mermaid shrines. The "crystal theme" (called ORBS in the American game) would be used again in the series' history. Each of the eight classes were visual distinct and suited to a very specific purpose.

Yoshitaka Amano... a long-time contributor to the Final Fantasy series, returns as the image designer. Amano provided concept sketches to the programmers, who converted them into the Sprites that feature in the game. Some liberties were taken during the conversion, such as the changing of Terra's hair from blond to green. The PlayStation release includes full motion video produced specifically for the re-release: the character designs in these video sequences are based on Amano's designs, rather than the sprites in the game.
