Its mandate is to highlight both domestic and international films with family and children themes and to make sure that filmmakers get visibility in Hollywood's backyard. The Hollywood KIDS Film Festival™ is an intrinsic part of the Hollywood Film Festival®. Selected films compete in the Festival's main competition.

Fan filmmakers have traditionally been amateurs, but some of the more notable films have actually been produced by professional filmmakers as film school class projects or as demonstration reels. Fan films vary tremendously in length, from short faux-teaser trailers for non-existent motion pictures to rarer full-length motion pictures.
