Traditionally, the lineup for Best Film Editing closely mirrors the Best Picture lineup. A 4/5 crossover is common, with a 3/5 crossover being almost always the case. In 2002, the five Best Picture nominees were the five nominees here. Yet last year, only two of the nominees were for films cited for Best Picture: the great Michael Kahn for “Munich” and eventual winner Hughes Winborne for “Crash.”

The electronic editing system may be programmed to produce an edit listing appropriate to the particular media on which the finalized version of the film source material is to appear. If the source film material is to be finalized as film, the system may be specified to produce a cut list. The cut list is a guide for conforming the film negative to the edited video copy of the film footage. It includes a pull Hst and an assemble list. The assemble list provides a Hst of cuts in the order in which they must be sphced together on the film. The pull Hst provides a reel-by-reel Hsting of each film cut.

Regardless of the actual title, the program that an individual choose to pursue should be accredited and have a solid history of successful graduates to point to as proof of their worth. One can find a list of schools that offer these classes by searching online and then linking to the school's Web sites for detailed information about curriculum, cost, and admissions procedures. The best schools offering film editing degrees will provide critical, theoretical, and, above all, practical instruction in editing.

The editing of the three films cut on traditional systems is clearly different from that of the three films cut electronically. There are statistically significant differences on a number of measures, and although the sample is not random (and therefore the differences apply only to these films and not to the whole universe of Hollywood films), the films examined are in many ways "typical" Hollywood product. They are representative in an intuitive way, if not in a strictly mathematical sense. It would be difficult to argue that these six films are so peculiar that differences shown to be linked to the type of editing system would not ... be found, perhaps to varying degrees, in other Hollywood films.
