File sharing involves using technology that allows internet users to share files that are housed on their individual computers. Peer-to-peer (P2P) applications, such as those used to share music files, are some of the most common forms of file-sharing technology. However, P2P applications introduce security risks that may put your information or your computer in jeopardy.

KaZaA's P2P file sharing network allows users to search for and download audio, video, image and text files using one of three interfaces: the KaZaA Media Desktop Peer-To-Peer (P2P) client, KaZaA's Winamp Plug-in or the KaZaA.com web site. KaZaA's distributed network is "self-organizing" and features the ability to automatically transform more powerful clients into "SuperNodes" able to broker the search query requests of the weaker nodes on-demand. (See the FAQ for more technical details). The service is currently free, but KaZaA anticipates a small fee in the future in light of the lawsuits against Napster and Scour. KaZaA's core technology is based on KaZaAlib, a platform independent C++ library comprised of 59 functions. (The company has not yet formalized an open source development program.)

Some believe that “recreational file-sharing” is likely to go unnoticed. This is not the case. Copyright holders are significantly intensifying enforcement using automated scanning software to identify infringements, no matter how small. Last April, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed suit against four students at three universities for copyright infringement; settlements ranged from $12,000 to $17,000. More recently, the RIAA served over 1,100 subpoenas to collect user identity information of alleged infringers from Internet Service Providers and then filed over 200 lawsuits using this information.

[History] Mr. Isamu Kaneko was the first file-sharing software developer arrested in Japan. He developed and posted Winny, quasi-anonymous P2P file-sharing software(*) still runnung on more than 400,000 nodes today. He was claimed to 'assisted' two users who illegally uploaded copyrighted materials using Winny. As soon as Mr. Kaneko arrested, FreeKaneko.com starts supporting activity (http://www.freekaneko.com/en/index.html). CPSR Japan chapter (CPSR/Japan) has been supported FreeKaneko.com and its successor, Lesgue for Software Engineers (LSE).

Millions of people use free P2P file sharing programs - software to swap music, video and other files over the Internet. Many free P2P file sharing programs exist. Some P2P software offers a larger user base and greater numbers of files to choose from. Some software better utilizes network resources and may be easier to use. Finally, some P2P file sharing programs are increasing in popularity while others are declining. Consider all of these factors when deciding which P2P network to join.
