File sharing became popular with the birth of Napster. At it’s peak, Napster claimed nearly 60 million visitors per month. Napster users were able to share music with other users, ignoring copyright law. As the pioneer of peer to peer file sharing, Napster allowed individuals to share music stored on their hard drives directly with other Napster users. Users installed Napster software, making this sharing possible. Each user’s computer became a mini-server.

File sharing allows people to share files amongst their friends/other people online. Napster was one of the first mainstream examples of this that caught media attention. Recently, programs such as Kazaa and eDonkey have surfaced. Users on these programs can share any file on their computer, including music, movies, pictures etc.

A product called Network Magic 2.0 facilitates file- and printer-sharing among networked PCs, and even permits remote access to shared files via the Internet. Network Magic 2.0 automatically finds and maps an entire network, including computers, wired routers, wireless routers, and printers. The mapping ... allows users to know the status, maker, IP address, and MAC address of the devices, and can be configured to instantly inform users when a new device is connected or if a device leaves the network. But because Network Magic is specific for Windows, it does not support SMB Linux shares. It is necessary to download and install Network Magic on each Windows PC in the network to enable file sharing; users can then use the Network Magic interface or right click on any folder and select add "to shared folders." A service called "Net2Go" permits remote, online access to shared folders, but the log-in page is not secured by SSL or an https login interface.

Hotline is a P2P-Client/Server hybrid system for community building and file sharing that has been in operation since 1997. Hotline Connect is a suite which includes both a Hotline Client application and a Hotline Server application (available via separate downloads). Hotline works over any Internet or Intranet network and has capabilities similar to File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Internet Relay Chat (IRC), but using its own "Hotline Protocol". Features include resumable uploads and downloads, real time chat, newsgroup style forums, and streaming capabilities in numerous media and file formats. The program's search function is used to locate servers, rather than the files of individual users. The Hotline Client, which has approximately a million active users, provides an easy-to-use interface and small memory requirements (2 MB).

If you have password protected sharing enabled, use the File Sharing window to select which users can access the shared folder and their permission level. To allow all users, select Everyone in the list of users. By default, the permission level for a selected user is Reader. Users cannot change files or create new files in the share. To allow a user to change files or folders or create new files or folders, select Co-owner as the permission level. Figure 5 shows an example of configuring users and permission levels in the File Sharing window.
