File Sharing: Networks
built 220 days ago
From time to time, a student will establish a Direct Connect hub within the university network in order to create an illegal file sharing community. Often such a hub will refuse to allow connections from outside the university (believing that this will protect the members from the agents of the copyright owners). The more members that a hub has, the more useful it becomes for its members. However, the more members that a hub has, the harder it is to keep it a secret. Eventually, the hub is mentioned on Web sites (Google search, for example), in the student newspaper, and even perhaps used by student interns from organizations in the entertainment industry. Complaints may be filed with Project NEThics.

Members of the University are obligated to know what is and is not allowed under copyright, including appropriate and inappropriate forms of file sharing. Anyone seeking a University computing account is required to review and agree to the terms of the Proper Use of Information Resources, Information Technology, and Networks at the University of Michigan (Standard Practice Guide 601.7) and its accompanying document Guidelines for Implementing the Proper Use Policy of the University of Michigan: Responsible Use of Technology Resources. This policy and its guidelines prohibit copyright infringement and provide information about the sanctions for misusing University networks and IT facilities. ITCS ... has a helpful reference guide entitled Ethical and Legal Use of Digital Media: A Guide for Students, Faculty, and Staff of the University of Michigan.
The first generation of peer-to-peer file sharing networks had a centralized file list. In the centralized peer-to-peer model, a user would send a search to the centralized server of what they were looking for. The server then sends back a list of peers that have the data and facilitates the connection and download.
This program works with MP3, MPEG, AVI, ASF, MOV, JPEG, GIF, and all other file types. It features full documentation (installed with the program), slick graphics, and a user interface that makes searching, downloading, and file sharing easy. It ... features upload bandwidth controls, enhanced connection management, and improved downloading.
The program has a Community button, which instantly connects you through your browser to BearShare.Net, a thriving forum with information and resources to help you use the network.
Version 2.2.6 adds a "family filter" option, which hides adult keywords from search results and queries.
