Signatures in files are used to easily identify file formats by automatic identifier tools, as well as by general software. In the 1980's file signatures would consists of only 2 bytes (or 2 characters), but with the amount of file formats in existence today, this creates several duplicate identification. It is strongly suggested that your signature consist of at least 8 bytes or 8 characters.

DDS File Layout Note that the field names used in this description do not correspond exactly with the DDSURFACEDESC2 fields due to the restrictions placed on the DDS file format, but a standard DDSURFACEDESC2 structure can and should be used. Use the magic DDS value and the header dwSize value to validate the file.
Uncompressed bitmap files (such as BMP) are typically much larger than compressed (with any of various methods) image file formats for the same image. For example, the 1058×1058 Wikipedia logo, which occupies about 287.65 KB in the PNG format, takes about 3358 KB as a 24-bit BMP file. Uncompressed formats are generally unsuitable for transferring images on the Internet or other slow or capacity-limited media.
Observations sent to the AAVSO either by file upload in WebObs (which requires logging in to Blue&Gold first) or via email, must be formatted in the Official AAVSO Format. Below are links to the Official Visual and Extended formats.

Photoshop: This is Photoshop's native file format. If you have created a graphic with a multitude of layers (especially type layers), and you want to save these layers for any changes that you intend to make in the future, then save the graphic in Photoshop format because it is the only format that allows you to save layers. For all other formats, you must first Flatten Layers (under the Layer menu) before you can save the graphic.
Version of the file-format; Unreal1 uses mostly 61-63, UT 67-69; However note that quite a few packages are in use with UT that have Unreal1 versions. see the appendix for more details
