File Format: Applications
built 187 days ago
Although any JPEG process is supported by the syntax of the JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF) it is strongly recommended that the JPEG baseline process be used for the purposes of file interchange. This ensures maximum compatibility with all applications supporting JPEG. JFIF conforms to the JPEG Draft International Standard (ISO DIS 10918-1).

Most file formats were developed to support a specific software application or process. What happens if you need to exchange the file with someone who lacks the specific application used to create the file? Better get that Snickers bar-you're not going anywhere for awhile. While some internal descriptions of file formats have been published to enable developers to build support in other applications, developing file format support can take a lot of time. As software applications mushroom and digital processes proliferate, a dizzying number of file formats are emerging. Supporting all of them in every application is impractical-hence the need for standards.

Wong says Microsoft's file format is a binary file wrapped in some XML tags. "It's XML only as long as you use another Microsoft application, or one authorised by the company to read it, which is not in the spirit of XML," he says.

TIFF: TIFF is the most widely supported graphic file format in existence. It is primarily used for scanned images (mostly scanned photographs) and is the best graphic file format (besides EPS) for use in desktop publishing applications. Graphics saved in TIFF format can be easily opened on both Macintosh and PC/Windows platforms.

In the context of office documents, the file formats most people are familiar with are the ones created by Microsoft for its Office application suite. The file extensions (suffixes) that users are most familiar with in this context are .doc, .xls and .ppt. These extensions come at the end of a file name, for example, “thisdocument.doc”; the extension tells the user which software application was used to create the file. In the case of the example, the application associated with the file name would be one of several possible versions of the Word module of Microsoft Office.

Before saving a Microsoft Project file in the MPX file format, check that the application to which you want to transfer your project information can interpret the MPX format. In some cases, you may need to run a conversion program before using your file in the other application.
