From a casting standpoint, Field of Dreams is top notch. This marks the second foray into the baseball genre for Kevin Costner, coming after the fan-favorite hit Bull Durham, and it proves to be another winner. Costner has that easygoing style that complements the game well, as well as the solitude of farm life -- it's hard to imagine someone else fitting better into the role. Casting an "everyman" as Kinsella is crucial, as we need to feel that he is sane enough to not think he is completely off his rocker when listening to the voice in his head, and then drive his family into the brink of bankruptcy. Veterans James Earl Jones (Conan the Barbarian, The Last Remake of Beau Geste) and Burt Lancaster (The Island of Dr. Moreau, From Here to Eternity), in his final big screen role, give some of their best screen performances in years, while the ensemble of baseball players is perfectly suited to the style and era that they belong to, respectively.

According to supplementary material on the DVD edition of Field of Dreams, shortly before filming of the movie began, the father of actor Dwier Brown, who played Ray Kinsella's father, had died. Immediately after the funeral, Brown traveled directly to filming in Iowa for the scene. He stated that although the emotion was too fresh and painful, it had an effect on how he eventually played his scene with Kevin Costner.

Field of Dreams (1989) is a fairy tale celebration of the love of baseball, adapted by screenwriter/director Phil Alden Robinson from W. P. Kinsella's novel Shoeless Joe. The film is almost dreamlike (aided by the mystical score by James Horner). Just one year after playing catcher "Crash" Davis in Bull Durham (1988), Kevin Costner appeared in this second sports film - another baseball-themed film coupled with the religious themes of faith and redemption. This sentimental, modern fantasy classic became a smash hit in its unique depiction of Americana.

Many people just think marketing is like that Kevin Costner movie, “Field of Dreams.” They think that if they build it, people will come. They think that they’re just going to do things such as bulk e-mail and the money is just going to come flowing in like rain. That does not happen!
