Cuban President Fidel Castro has accused the United States of inspiring two soldiers who killed an officer during a failed attempt to hijack an airplane to the United States. In a written statement Monday, Mr. Castro said the soldiers were encouraged by the prospect of impunity in the U.S.

AP 9/9/99 "....Cuban President Fidel Castro said the United States would fail if it tried to intervene in Colombia's guerrilla war and predicted capitalism's collapse in remarks at a youth conference that lasted more than four hours. Those who advocate U.S. intervention ``have no idea of what a war is or what an intervention of that type would signify when all patriotism and national spirit is aroused,'' he said Wednesday, responding to a question from a Colombian student. Some analysts in the United States have speculated that growing guerrilla activity in Colombia could eventually draw a U.S. intervention, but American policymakers have strongly denied such intentions. ``It is asking to put the United States into a very big conflict and a very great risk,'' Castro said....."

Castro Ever since President Fidel Castro underwent abdominal surgery last July, Cuban officials have promised that the country's leader would one day return to his post. But U.S. intelligence officials have told Time magazine that Castro has terminal cancer and will never return to power. The Cuban government has denied this assertion. "The United States Intelligence Services have been wrong for more than 47 years in their predictions not only in relation to the health of the Cuban President but ... in all aspects regarding our country," said one high-ranking Cuban official. He cited Castro's July 31 declaration that his surgery and treatment for intestinal bleeding "obliges me to spend several weeks in repose, away from my responsibilities and duties." According to Cuban sources, preparations continue for a belated celebration of Castro's 80th birthday on Dec. 2.
