Fibroids are benign tumours of the muscle of the uterus (womb). They are one of the most common tumours found in women during their reproductive years, although their place in causing infertility has been somewhat controversial. Fibroids are the single most common cause for hysterectomy, being responsible for somewhere between 20% and 77% of all hysterectomies performed. Fibroids can be found in up to half of all women undergoing a post mortem examination. They are more common in women who have not had children, women who are overweight and black women. Only about a quarter of women with fibroids will experience any symptoms.

Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) growths that develop within the uterus. As many as 30 percent of women have fibroids. Some women have one fibroid; other women have many. Fibroids range in size from as small as a pea to as large as a melon. Most women with fibroids have no symptoms and don't need treatment. When symptoms occur, women should seek medical attention.

Fibroids are the most common gynecological tumor in women. Clinical studies show that 20-25% of women of reproductive age have fibroids. Post-mortem studies show the incidence in all women is as high as 75%. Although these tumors are for the most part benign, there can be a malignancy rate of 0.1-0.2%. Studies show that these benign tumors (... known as fibroids, leiomyomas, fibromas or myomas) are 4-6 times more common in African American women that in Caucasian women, which suggests a possible genetic predisposition.

Fibroids are more common in African American women than in women of other racial groups. One study showed that fibroids are three times more common in African American women than in Caucasian women. Additionally, fibroids tend to be larger and occur at an earlier age in African Americans. It is unclear as to why such differences exists.

Fibroids are an enormous healthcare problem because they are the primary reason given for surgery in 199,000 hysterectomies and 30,000 myomectomies performed yearly in the US. The cost of inpatient surgery for fibroids is about $2 billion a year. Time taken away from work or family make this condition very costly for women and their families. And, presently there are many options other than hysterectomy available for women with bothersome fibroid symptoms.
