Fibroids: Ultrasound
built 266 days ago
Types of uterine fibroids One of the most common conditions confused with fibroids is adenomyosis. In adenomyosis the lining of the uterus infiltrates the wall of the uterus, causing the wall to thicken and the uterus to enlarge. On ultrasound examination this will often appear as diffuse thickening of the wall, while fibroids are seen as round areas with a discrete border. Adenomyosis is usually a diffuse process, and rarely can be removed without taking out the uterus. Since fibroids can be removed or treated by uterine artery embolization, it is important to differentiate between the two conditions before planning treatment. It is ... common to have some adenomyosis in addition to fibroids.
ExAblate 2000 uses a combination of high intensity ultrasound waves and magnetic resonance imaging to provide a novel outpatient treatment for fibroids. During treatment, magnetic resonance images enable the physician to visualize the fibroid and surrounding organs in three-dimensions, obtain real-time feedback about temperature changes in the treated area, and observe what has been treated; in a totally non-invasive manner.

Your doctor might find one or more fibroids during a routine pelvic exam or prenatal ultrasound. If this happens, the doctor may simply note this in your file, and perhaps monitor this during your regular check-ups.
