Fibroids: Problems
built 607 days ago
Dr. Bartsich Fibroids are overgrowths of muscle and connective tissue in the wall of the uterus. They may be described as solid, ball-like, smooth muscle tumors. Fibroids are usually benign, or non-cancerous, tumors but they can vary greatly in size, number and location, causing various problems depending on the situation.
Uterine Fibroids Fibroids are usually found during routine pelvic exams. If you have severe menstrual symptoms or other pelvic problems, your health care provider may recommend an ultrasound scan or D&C (dilatation and curettage) to determine the cause of the problems.

Fibroids grow very slowly and tend not to cause any problems or symptoms in younger women. They can cause symptoms as they grow bigger, but even so, at least half of all fibroids cause no problems at all.

logo It is estimated that 75% of women with fibroids do not have symptoms, therefore many women don't know they have fibroids. Whether or not you have symptoms depends on the size of the fibroids and where they are in your womb. This ... affects the types of symptoms you are likely to have. For example, a small fibroid in the wall of your womb probably won't cause any problems, whereas a large fibroid growing outward from your womb might press against your bladder, causing bladder problems.
The problems that fibroids may cause depend on their location. Fibroids are not the same as polyps. Polyps grow from the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) rather than from the underlying muscle (myometrium) as is the case with fibroids.

Uterine fibroids (non-cancerous tumors) are quite common - affecting between 20-50% of women of childbearing age. While many women do not experience any problems, symptoms can be severe enough to require treatment. Read more about fibroids.
