Fibroids: Pain
built 636 days ago
Symptoms are present in about half of the women with fibroids. The most common symptoms are pelvic pain, pain during sex, excessive vaginal bleeding, and a feeling of abdominal or pelvic fullness. In addition, the weight of a fibroid can compress the colon and urinary bladder, causing constipation or frequent urination. A very large fibroid can compress the veins that drain blood from the legs, causing leg swelling. In severe cases, the flow of urine from the kidneys can be blocked, injuring the kidneys.

Many women live with fibroids and still maintain a good quality of life. Some women may experience some symptoms of fibroids, but can still manage to perform their daily activities. Many women who suffer from symptomatic fibroids underestimate the severity of their symptoms as they have become accustomed to excessive bleeding, pain, and the pressure fibroids can cause. However, if the fibroid symptoms are so severe that they affect your ability to maintain your day to day activities, it is a good time to discuss with your physician all of the alternatives available to help you manage these symptoms. Although most fibroids do not cause problems, there can be complications. Fibroids that are attached to the uterus by a stem may twist. This can cause pain, nausea, or fever. Fibroids may become infected. This usually happens only when there is an infection already in the area. In very rare cases (far less than 1%), changes occur in the fibroid tissue that cause it to become malignant (cancerous).

UAE works well for women who have large fibroids that are causing discomfort or pain because of their size. If shrinking the fibroids to a little more than half their present size would relieve your symptoms, then UFE may be right for you. However, UAE may not be very helpful for women with extremely large fibroids because they may not shrink enough to make a difference in the symptoms.

Large fibroids can make the womb big and bulky, which can lead to lower back pain or pelvic discomfort. Some women with fibroids feel a dull ache in their thighs or develop varicose veins in their legs. This happens when fibroids become so large they press on nerves and blood vessels that extend to the legs.

Most fibroids are small and do not cause any problems. Women with several small fibroids or one large fibroid often have heavy bleeding and/or pain during their menstrual period. This pain and bleeding can cause a woman to miss work or school (see "Symptoms" above).
