Ferrite: Ferrite Magnets
built 656 days ago
Ferrite magnets require magnetizing fields of about 10 kOe. They can be magnetized with multiple poles on one or both pole surfaces. No special handling precautions are required, except that large blocks of Ferrite magnets are powerful, and care should be taken to ensure that they do not snap towards each other.

Ferrite magnets can be produced isotropically or anisotropically. Isotropic grades are not oriented and can be magnetized in any direction, although some degree of greater magnetic strength will be found in the pressing dimension, usually the shortest dimension. Anisotropic grades are oriented in the manufacturing direction, and must be magnetized in the direction of orientation.

Ferrite designs can equal or exceed an Alnico magnet’s flux stability with the addition of a copper shorting ring around the pole piece. With the use of vented cooling and heat sinking, you can manage the heat build-up on a ferrite driver to where it stays below the threshold of non-linear response. Finally with the addition of secondary magnets, you can shield the motor of a ferrite driver to the same degree as an internal ferrite equivalent.

Ferrite magnets are more commonly referred to as ceramic magnets. They are mostly composed of strontium and Iron oxide (SrO . 6Fe2O3) and offer solid performance with their low cost, higher coercive force than alnico and low recoil permeability. They are widely used for [L]oudspeakers, small motors, generators, and rotors.

Ferrite magnets are ... good for doing repulsion and attraction experiments since some of the rare earth magnets may be too strong and steel bar magnets will demagnetize. The plain ferrites shown below are all magnetized through their thickness.

Rubber magnets are a composite material of Ferrite magnet powder and compound rubber, hence the flexibility. Variations are magnet strips, tapes and sheet format with or without self-adhesive backing. These are available in both Anisotropic & Isotropic grades. The Isotropic grades can be supplied with a coloured or plain white vinyl finish. Ferrite flexible magnets have existed as a product for over 30 years and principle applications include reed switch operation, magnetic masks and general light holding. This material can be readily cut using a sharp knife or scissors. It is ... possible to injection mould ferrite magnet products, however inmost cases tooling is required.
