LYCOS RETRIEVER
Ferrets (Pet): Dogs
built 254 days ago
Ferrets are very inquisitive animals and love to have toys in their cages, dog and cat toys are suitable as long as the ferret cannot bite pieces off them. Also special ferret toys are available such as balls, and suspended hammocks and tunnels. Pieces of storm water pipe can ... be joined together to create tunnels.

Ferrets are a lot of fun. They are very playful, with each other and with you, and they don't lose much of that playfulness as they get older. A ferret -- or better, two or more -- can be a very entertaining companion. They are smarter than cats and dogs, or at least they act it. They are ... very inquisitive and remarkably determined, which is part of their charm but can also be a bit of a bother.

Whether dogs get along with ferrets is a much more complicated and individual issue, and you must carefully consider a dog's temperament before introducing him or her to a ferret. Many dogs will be fine with ferrets, but remember that some dog breeds (such as some terriers) were bred for the purpose of hunting small game, so might be tempted to chase ferrets by instinct. Large dogs may inadvertently hurt a ferret in play, territorial dogs might snap at a ferret if the ferret gets too close to its toys or food, and any dog might instinctively react to being chased or nipped by a ferret. It is possible for a dog, especially a larger one, to seriously hurt a ferret by accident or just by natural dog behavior, so be cautious. If there is any doubt or any sign of aggression, it is best to never have dogs and ferrets run free together. Make sure to keep ferrets away from your dog's food and toys.

Two ferrets cost twice as much. Not just the purchase price which is around $110.00, but ... food, litter, and vet bills. They also require a larger cage which can accommodate two ferrets comfortably. Two ferrets get into twice as much trouble. However, two ferrets is the way to go if you can afford it. Ferrets are not like dogs. While they will bond with humans, they still need ferret companionship.

Just like dogs and cats, ferrets require a series of vaccinations as youngsters. Once a year, they ... require an examination, a fecal test for internal parasites, and vaccination boosters. Once a ferret becomes 3 years of age, it requires a complete geriatric profile (see below) (remember they are already considered seniors!).

Similarly, dogs and cats that grow up with ferrets are more likely to accept and play with them. Still, for the safety of all involved, it is a good idea to supervise interactions between ferrets and any other pet.
