By 1964, even though Fender was still expanding, Leo wanted out. His health was poor and he'd been working almost non-stop since the beginning. Overwhelmed and ready for a break, he sold Fender to CBS for $13m. This was a big payout in 1964 but CBS saw even more potential for growth in the company.

Fender's competition made their guitars out of single, solid pieces of wood. This was a costly and time-consuming process. Leo Fender had the foresight to realize that he could manufacture the body of the guitar separately from the neck, and then simply bolt them together. This made his brand of guitars less expensive to build and far less expensive to repair.
In 1964 the Fender company was sold by Leo Fender to CBS. Though nothing about the guitars features immediately changed because of this. The pots start to be stamped on the base instead of the sides, like they were before.
The guitar, a G&L bass, was personally given to Levesque by Leo Fender, the father of the electric bass guitar. Coincidentally, the parking lot of the Slidebar is considered rock-and-roll holy ground, as it was once the location of one of Leo Fender's earliest guitar factories.
