Felix Mendelssohn: Carl Zelter
built 627 days ago
Mendelssohn was deeply influenced by the music of J.S. Bach. His aunt, Sarah Levy (née Itzig) was a pupil of Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, and had supported the widow of another son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. She had collected a number of Bach manuscripts. J.S. Bach's music, which had fallen into relative obscurity by the turn of the 19th century, was ... deeply respected by Felix's teacher Zelter.
Mendelssohn's personal life was conventional. His marriage to Cécile Jeanrenaud in March of 1837 was very happy and the couple had five children: Carl, Marie, Paul, Felix, and Lilli. Mendelssohn was an accomplished painter in watercolours, and his enormous correspondence shows that he could ... be a witty writer in German and English—sometimes accompanied by humorous sketches and cartoons in the text.
In 1821 Mendelssohn became acquainted with Carl Maria von Weber, whose compositions served as a romantic model for his own. Later that year Zelter took him to Weimar to meet Goethe, who described the lad of 12 as having "the smallest modicum of the phlegmatic and the maximum of the opposite quality."

Toward the close of this year, 1821, his teacher Zelter announced he intended going to Wiemar, to see Goethe, the aged poet of Wiemar, and was willing to take Felix with him. The poet's house at Wiemar was indeed a shrine to the elect, and the chance of meeting the object of so much hero worship, filled the impressionable mind of Felix with reverential awe. Zelter on his part, felt a certain pride in bringing his favorite pupil to the notice of the great man, though he would not have permitted Felix to guess what he felt for anything he possessed.
