Beyond talented, it is about time that Felicity Huffman is getting the recognition she deserves. It started in September when she walked away with an Emmy for her role on "Desperate Housewives," beating out all the other ladies on Wisteria Lane in the process. Then in January she snatched up the Golden Globe. And sure, she may have lost out on the Oscar this year, but that doesn't exactly make her a slouch. An Oscar nomination is still a hefty addition to the old resume.

It’s ... an extraordinary demonstration of talent from Felicity Huffman in the role of Bree, one of those totally committed, all-or-nothing performances that, once seen, is never forgotten. She’s a woman, playing a man who is learning to live as a woman and there’s not a shred of drag-queen camp or “Tootsie†satire about it. Bree is a refined lady. She favours pale pastel colours and her manners are genteel and impeccable. She’s the extreme opposite of the unhappy, sullen Toby and she tries to persuade herself that this trip is just a delivery job in which she will drop Toby off to start his new life while she goes on with hers. The journey is just a phase they are going through. But kinship and kindness work their own miracles.

How has Felicity Huffman stayed balanced in the days leading up to Oscars night? Pampering. The Best Actress nominee for Transamerica rewarded herself at the Diamond Aquifer Mystical Retreat at the exclusive SoHo House in the Hollywood Hills, where she tried on jewels and indulged in spa treatments. "I'm getting a pedicure and a facial. I'm going to walk out of here looking like Scarlett Johansson," she told us.

For a long time, Felicity Huffman felt lost in Hollywood. She'd go from a failed TV series to stage-managing student plays. She was making $12,000 a year. In one really bad dry spell, she threw up her hands in defeat and got an application to one of Los Angeles' Marinello Schools of Beauty. She could always be a hairdresser.
