That search was the beginning of a journey that ultimately shaped Huffman's performance in writer-director Duncan Tucker's moving film, making the actress a prime awards-season contender. "I went over to their house and heard their stories and asked things like, 'When did you know how to start dressing like a woman?' and about the experience with sexual reassignment surgery," Huffman says. "Then we went through the script page by page so that we felt my character Bree's journey was authentic.
