Leslie Feist, originally of Amherst, Nova Scotia, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and member of Broken Social Scene. Her musical beginnings can be traced back to a Canadian punk band called Placebo, which earned an opening slot for the Ramones. After five years as vocalist, Feist was forced to rest her voice due to vocal chord damage. During this period, she taught herself to play guitar, eventually moving to Calgary and becoming guitarist in Canadian band By Divine Right. In 1999, she ... returned to singing, releasing Monarch (Lay Down Your Jeweled Head). She then spent a period touring with roommate Peaches, performing in her shows and videos as Bitch Lap Lap and rapping in Spanish with a sock puppet.

If Call and Response's Carrie Clough is the Nick Drake of indie rock, then Leslie Feist is the Colin Blunstone. Her voice has that warm, buttery ooze that melts down the microphone with the same gentle timbre heard on Blunstone's "Caroline Goodbye." Feist's musical history maps out almost as nomadically as her own travels. She cut her pearly whites in a Calgary punk band called Placebo (not to be confused with the eyeliner-and-nail-polish-wearing British guys) and got to play her very first show opening for the Ramones after winning a battle of the bands contest while still attending high school. Needless to say, that show changed her life. She spent the next half-decade touring in a van and screaming her voice out -- literally.

In 2004, veteran Canadian indie-rock scenester Leslie Feist gathered some songs she'd recorded with friends in Paris and released them as Let It Die, a belated follow-up to her 1999 solo debut, Monarch (Lay Down Your Jeweled Head). The second record was slight by design, but likeable—the perfect soundtrack for a day of lounging about, doing nothing. And while Let It Die became an unexpected cult hit, riding the popularity of the catchy single "Mushaboom" and a cover of Bee Gees' "Love You Inside Out," Feist doesn't intensify her approach at all on her eagerly awaited new record The Reminder. Back in Paris with expatriate pianist Chilly Gonzales and an assortment of fellow travelers, Feist puts together a set of songs more assured and striking than those on Let It Die, but with the same offhand, lazing-around-on-a-rainy-afternoon feel.

Feist got her start in music as the lead vocalist for a Calgary punk band called Placebo (not the more famous British band Placebo), who won a local Battle of the Bands competition and were awarded the opening slot at a Ramones concert. After five years of touring, Feist was forced to take time off from music to recover from voice damage. She moved from Calgary to Toronto in 1998 and took up guitar; by 1999, she was the guitarist for By Divine Right. Leslie Feist was born February 13, 1976 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She was raised in a very artistic family, as her father was an expressionist painter and visual arts professor. At a very young age, Leslie developed a love for writing, and originally planned to go into journalism. However, she was ... fond of singing, and at the age of 15 started a punk-rock band named Placebo. The group won their first high school battle of the bands, and soon after were playing at local clubs and parties.
