[One] documentary within a documentary, Roma mixes flashbacks about Fellini's own past growing up in Rome with the story of a movie company making a film about the city (with Fellini playing the director). The film itself warns that there is no story in a traditional sense in this movie, but it has all the earmarks of his lush, colorful cinematography.

Both directors regard humans as if they were tadpoles, to some extent, but whereas Bergman divorced himself from the equation, Fellini, at least in 8 1/2, did not. Which is why it is a better film even than The Silence.
